Our spontaneous trip to Abbeville, South Carolina was only possible because of our stay at The Bernibrooks Inn.  Karen Berni welcomed us with open arms (and we told her upfront we had a 1-year-old with a fever!).  She went out of her way to make sure I had a filling breakfast, with all my dietary issues.  Bowls of fresh fruit (Went LOVED the Kiwi) and a generous serving of Strawberry Stuffed French Toast for Otto.   At night, a small refrigerator held complimentary bottles of water and coke.

The Bernibrooks Inn has only been home to four families, since it was built.  The rooms are beautiful and full of antiques, but the hostess is so invested in making it feel like home, that she encouraged Went to use the ancient hope chest as a tool to help him cruise around the room.

We had the Royal Room, with the adjoining smaller room for Went.  The Royal Room had a private bath (with shower, sink, toilet), plus a jacuzzi tub in the main part of the room.  The weather was still a tad warm, but a few degrees cooler and we would have started a fire in the fireplace (both rooms had one).  There was also a beautiful balcony, perfect for a morning or evening cup of coffee.

I cannot recommend a trip to Abbeville, highly enough.  There are plenty of things to see and do – quieter things, mind you.  Not movies and putt-putt or such activities as that.  But walking along historic streets, seeing Civil War Tunnels, geocaching, eating (so many restaurants we didn’t get to eat at!), the Abbeville Opera House (which is actually a small-town theatre) – it’s History at it’s finest.  Perfect for a family to take a quick affordable weekend away.  It’s rare to find a Bed and Breakfast that likes families, so I am thrilled that I will be able to introduce this type of lodging to my Caterpillars early on in their lives.  If you are looking for a place to escape for a couple of days, you simply must give Karen a call.
