Life Promises for Couples – A Book Review

Released in January, today seemed like an appropriate day to review Dr. Gary Chapman’s newest book – Life Promises for Couples.  It’s an interesting book, one that is suitable for those who have been married for years and those who have just started their journey together.  I, personally, suggest having either read The Five Love Languages, first, or at least have some idea of what they are.

Each promise has a short “note” from Dr. Chapman on topic, along with three Scripture verses on the topic.  It is not necessary to begin at the first page and read straight through.  I enjoyed using the Scripture index in the back and searching that way for topics/life promises to read.

One of the things I like about Dr. Chapman – and see very clearly in this book – is that he believes in the power of God, but realizes the choices of man.  Yes, you can do everything right – or you can do lots of things right – or you AND your significant other can do lots of things right, but everything doesn’t always work out right.  That doesn’t diminish God’s power in any way, or His love for His children.  This book continues to encourage Christians to seek God’s will, but constantly reminds the reader(s) that seeking God’s will is a personal choice, and you can’t force anyone else to do so – or even agree with you.  It’s real, and about real life, something that is lacking in many “Christian” books.

I would suggest this book as a small engagement or wedding gift.  Or perhaps on the first anniversary.  That being said, I do think it is applicable and useful to couples in any stage of their relationships.
